Food in a Flash

New York TimesThere was a time not too long ago when I was among the fast food obsessed, eagerly gobbling up tacos, cheeseburgers, and other flash fried pseudo-meat creations, but when I watched Morgan Spurlock’s Supersize Me, I abandoned my obsession like a bad crush.

The New York Times this week published a story where a food critic had travelled the United States, testing fast food and ranked his Top 10. The 10 Favorites included selections from well-known favorites like KFC, Dairy Queen, Wendys and Sonic, as well as lesser known places like Varsity and Taco Cabana. The idea of the fast food recommendations isn’t a new one. The Washington Post did it last year, Slate did it in 2003, and even the New York Times itself has taste tested things before. But for a food critic, whose taste buds are more apt to sip fine wines and nibble on imported foie gras, it is shocking to me - the reader - that he spent nine days eating the nation’s fast food.

Yes. I said nine days.

My stomach lurches and my arterties seize just thinking about nine days of fast food (or even just one meal). It’s funny how tastes and times change. Where as I used to grab quick food often, too exhausted after long days to cook or grocery shop, now I savor every moment I spend whipping up all sorts of fresh dishes.

But to each his own, I suppose.
