Hump Day Horizons: Baking

There are a number of books coming out in the next six months that tackle a variety of baking related subjects from cupcakes to breads and everything in between. I’ve selected three that look particularly promising.

Personally speaking, I have a secret love affair with baking. It’s something that terrifies and excites me all at once, since it is so much of a science. I have experimented with baking and had both excellent and dreadful results. So when I decided to write about upcoming books, that was the subject I decided to start with.

Crazy About Cupcakes
By Krystina Castella - Sterling Publishing Company/$17.95

The listings on Amazon and Barnes and Noble for this book both attest to the collection of 300 recipes and a special chapter on flavor matching. The table of contents, available for viewing at the Library of Congress here, looks very promising.

Cupcakes are an old idea that’s become a new craze these days. It seems everyone is talking about, eating or making these mini cakes. There’s just something so special about serving little cakes for everyone – easy serving, easy cleanup and no cutting.

According to the publisher, it’s due out in August.

Beautiful Breads and Fabulous Fillings: The Best Sandwiches in America
By Margaux Sky – Rutledge Hill Press/$24.99

Margaux Sky just wasn’t making ends meet not long ago. Then Oprah changed her life. Oprah was in San Luis Obispo, Cali. and happened to try one of Sky’s sandwiches – She wrote a check to keep Sky in business and featured one of her creations on her show as well as in her magazine.

Now Sky, whose business is booming, has written a book on her breads and accompanying fillings so we can all eat so well. And I don’t know about you, but I think if Oprah Winfrey says it’s good then it’s got to be. That woman knows her food.

According to the publisher, this is a sampling of the menu:

• Avocado and Melted Swiss on Salsa Bread
• Roasted Rumble Bumble with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce on Honey Nut Wheat Bread
• TBLT on Horseradish Parmesan Bread
• And the “O” Special-Curried Chicken on Spicy Pepper Jack Bread

The book is due out in July.

Mom’s Big Book of Cookies: 200 Family Favorites You’ll Love Making and Your Kids Will Love Eating
By Lauren Chattman – The Harvard Common Press/$21.95

Although there wasn’t information available online from the publisher, I was able to find the table of contents at the Library of Congress and let me just say WOW! The chapters sound wonderful. Check it out by clicking here.

Cookies are a weakness of mine (okay, okay, all sweet are a weakness) and a book devoted to them that brings together old fashioned recipes with ones of ease and convenience is a dream for me. I am hoping that this one is as good as it sounds.

I will be sure to check this one out myself when it’s released in September.
