Dinner or dessert?

In last week’s Chicago Sun-Times, Dave Hoekstra introduced us to “Baseball’s Best Burger,” as declared by the Gateway Grizzlies baseball team in Sauget, IL. Served in a Krispy Kreme paper hat, the large cheeseburger consists of Black Angus beef, two slices of bacon, and sharp cheddar cheese, all layered between a sliced Krispy Kreme glazed donut. According to the article, this burger has approximately 1,000 calories and 45 grams of fat.
It seems the Grizzlies are known for unusual food combinations, including the “Swiss Brat,” from 2005, and “Baseball’s Best Hot Dog,” from 2004. The bratwurst has swiss cheese in the middle and is covered with sauerkraut, while the hot dog is a Black Angus beef weiner covered with bacon, sautéed onions, sauerkraut, and cheddar cheese. After reading Mr. Hoekstra’s intriguing descriptions of these tasty and innovative menu items, a roadtrip to the ballpark quickly becomes the foodies’ summer dream-destination.
