Real Simple: Mismatched and Reused

The folks at Real Simple know our cupboards are stuffed with odds and ends. Dishes, glasses, and pans that go unused but things we hold onto just in case. In their July “New Uses” column, Real Simple came up with six whimsical ways to repurpose everyday kitchen items.

Among their suggestions?

  • Use old wine glasses as candlesticks by inverting glasses and placing candles on the base.
  • Place a colorful sugar bowl in the bathroom and hide cotton balls and swabs inside.
  • Turn a covered baking sheet into a secret place to store stationary or bills.
  • Hang an old aluminum cookie sheet above a workstation and use as a magnet board.
  • Hold curtains in their place by slipping butter knives in the hems as weights.
  • Plant herbs and plants in unused mugs or bowls for a flirty display.

Here’s something that’s “mismatched” about Real Simple’s suggestions: aluminum and magnets. Magnets like certain kinds of iron-containing metals (cast iron, sheet iron, but not most stainless steels) and don’t stick to aluminum.

Oops…call me embarrassed. That’s my oversight. It is my connotation of the word, sort of like calling all soda Coke. I apologize. I should have used the word baking sheet.
