If you par boil your ribs don't call them BBQ - they are boiled ribs. Boiling them, in addition to losing a ton of flavor, also eliminates the the elements of ribs that literally makes them lip smaking as the connective tissue cooks away in the boiling liquid. That connective tissue is what makes ribs different from say pork chops. If you want convenience without sacrificing the great flavor then go with a pork shoulder steak - the taste is very similar to ribs but they only take about 20 minutes.

Madeline,
Great post. I run a Weber grill site, and I've definitely gotten the parboil question more than a few times. I think you're spot on. Carl, while parboiling can have the benefit of convenience, it gets there by sacrificing a bit on taste. Great post Madeline!

Weber is a great company and they sure make great bbqs. But I have to dissagree with them on par boiling ribs. A lot of people don't have the time to sit by the bbq for 2 hours as they watch their food indirectly cook on the grill. Par boiling is a good way to get your ribs nice and tender before your guests arrive, so that when the time comes, you just slap them on the grill for 10 minutes and they're good to go. Par boil, then marinate for 6 hrs, then grill.
