Joanna - You're on!!

I too read Almond's entire collection, which was deinitely not what I was expecting after reading CandyFreak.

Sweets Expo had two things going for it - besides meeting Steve Almond, in amongst the crappy candy vendors, the main vendor of imported bar chocolate in Canada had set up a booth. All the stuff like Cemoi, Poulaine, etc., that normally retails for $6 - $8CAD each was available at 3/$10. The vendor even threw in some freebies for us when he saw how much we were buying. We calculated that we came home with close to $100 worth of chocolate for just over $30CAD. Definitely a score. For that reason alone, I'll go back next year, but it's a ten-minute ride on the streetcar, not a roadtrip to another country.

Drop me and email and let's do the chocolate freak exchange thing!

Hi Faith!

I guess it's because I've never had a lot of US candy - the stuff Almond mentions that I've managed to get ahold of has all impressed me. At least in the context of eating one or two - the GooGoo Cluster was a delight.

I'm still trying to find a source for the Lake Champlain stuff in Canada - it sounds awesome.

I couldn't put that book down when I read it, and of course have become a big ol' Almond fan and subsequently have read everything else he wrote. I also got to see him a couple of times in Portland this past Spring. Sounds like i'm on the verge of stalker-status - whoops
Thanks for honest opinions about Sweets Expo because I've seriously been considering going to the one in Vancouver in Oct. Maybe not?

Okay - so I'll hook you up with the Idaho Spuds (easy to get in Oregon) for some sort of cross--culture candy exchange. For real. Let's talk.

Devoured the book, but have been disappointed in some of the candies he writes about. I've been tracking down some of his candy obsessions and have found most of them (except the Lake Champlain) are not something I'd regularly want to waste calories on.

The book is well written, almost like a print blog, and worth reading. Thanks for the write up.
