Breaking News! People Like to Read About Food!

Don’t despair Paper Palate readers and writers - the Birmingham News proclaimed: “Magazines about food still popular.” Thanks for the breaking news.

On a more serious note, the article actually discusses how many magazines devoted to food are available to consumers and how successful they have become. Examples of the trend include one of my favorites, Sunset, which “is still thriving in the West, with its focus on that region of the country.” Another example is Southern Living, characterized as “a mainstay magazine for a lot of readers in the South, and apparently in other areas as well, with winners of the last two Southern Living cooking contests coming from Connecticut and Maryland.”

The article then focuses on newcomers to the field of food magazines. The first is Paula Deen and her new magazine, Cooking with Paula Deen. The article notes that Cooking With Paula Deen takes advantage of Deen’s popularity and the popularity of her sons with its features on their homes and lives. Everyday Food is featured as a “small-format magazine has a large following.” The Birmingham News notes that through Everyday Food, Martha Stewart offers a unique perspective: “Who else but Martha would have molasses sandwich cookies, or baked mangoes with cinnamon-sugar tortillas?”

The article also makes a small mention of Every Day with Rachael Ray, a new magazine that reflects “the changing interests and new outlooks of today’s cooks.” Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine has been called a bright spot in an otherwise hurting magazine industry, according to Circulation Management magazine.
