Supermarket Green Wars
The gloves are off. The UK’s supermarkets have embarked on a game of one up-man-ship in the ‘green’ stakes. I guess in this enlightened age the stakes are high.
Tesco offers extra club card points for not using their carrier bags, Asda is using trains to reduce the road miles and thus the pollution and Sainsbury’s is now offering compostable packaging.
Next up, as the Times reports, is edible packaging - inks are being devloped and packaging, under development in Spain is being made from milk serum protein, glycerol and mesquite gum. Such packaging has to cope with temperature changes, humidity and leakage from food and works apparently although cost is an issue. Sounds awful to eat but not too different from the additives in many fast foods and ready meals I guess!
