Delicious Magazine October 2006

Kicking off the October issue of the UK edition of Delicious is the foodie file with a Wine of the Month; Pewsey Vale Riesling 2003, Eden Valley Australia (Oddbins £9.19) “With a bit of luck, there will still be a few warmish evenings left in which to enjoy the very last of the summer wine. Pick this juicy, lime-drenched Australian Riesling and you’ll have plenty of rich comforting flavours, even when the weather turns autumnal. Match with creamy, buttery white fish dishes.”
We all need to watch the food budget occasionally so the midweek meals - recipes serving 4 for £3-£4 a head - are always welcome. This month there is Turkey and Stilton pie, Roasted Pesto Chicken with Polenta and Veg and Tapenade Lamb with Butter Bean Mash, a cheats Beef Stroganoff and Salmon Gnocchi Bake. Pity I don’t really like polenta, stilton or gnocchi!
Something I never realised - you are supposed to tame horseradish sauce taken straight from the jar with cream or creme fraiche. All these years and I never knew… The best brand to go for, according to a taste test, are the Tracklements Strong Horseradish and Cream (£2.75) “The nearest to home-made.. with a whopping 63 percent fresh horseradish and big bits of grated root.” Others include the hot and fiery Moniack Castle Horseradish (£2.39) and The English Provender Co Hot Horseradish (£1.55).
Whitebait is the current trendy bar food, at least around Henley, and a recipe from the forthcoming British Regional Food: In Search of the Best British Food Today by Mark Hix (Amazon UK £15) allows the home cook a chance to recreate it. It is so easy even I managed it!
As this is the Autumn issue, the majority of recipes are seasonal - pork recipes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, various seafood dishes and several dishes made from free-foraged food (or from Waitrose if the hedgerow is just a step too far).
Some ol’ broad going by the name of Nigella offers an easy-does-it menu comprising one-pan sage and onion chicken and sausage with bread sauce flavoured potato gratin. The pud - Chocolate Cherry Trifle looks really delicious; gonna have to give that one a go.
Apples are the big seasonal fruit at the moment; so an Autumn magazine without featuring any would just be crazy talk. So Delicious offers Bramley Apple Pancakes with toffee sauce, Dorset Apple Cake, Eccles cake baked apples and apple crumble ice-cream. Aaah, Delicious… you know what I like!
