Hump Day Horizons: Good Causes

When I went to search for books to highlight on Hump Day Horizons, the topic was staring me in the face literally. When I navigated through the upcoming books to the food category, there was Morgan Freeman.

Morgan Freeman? I thought. But apparently hes headlining a new cookbook that is going to raise funds for hurricane relief in the Caribbean island of Grenada.

But there are so many good causes out there, such as Hurricane Katrina relief here in the US, breast cancer research, AIDS research and a myriad of childhood illnesses. At some point, there is some sort of a benefit for all of these. Nonetheless, with cookbooks for good causes recently released and some on the horizon, I bring to you cookbooks for a cause this week.

Enjoy!

Morgan Freeman and Friends: Caribbean Cooking for a Cause
by Wendy Wilkinson - Rodale Press, Incorporated/$35.00

Morgan Freeman headlines a group of celebrities including Alicia Keyes, Katie Couric and Kenny Chesney in this cookbook with a dual purpose. Freeman is donating all of his proceeds from this book to help rebuilt Grenada, a small Caribbean island that was devastated when Hurricane Ivan struck in Sept. 2004.

But ultimately this is a cookbook and it is filled with Caribbean recipes. Recipes in this book reportedly include Grilled Swordfish with Lemon Caperberry Butter and Key Lime Pie.

This book is due out this month.

In Great Taste: Fresh, Simple Recipes for Eating and Living Well
by Evelyn H. Lauder - Rodale Press, Incorporated/$29.95

One in seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer. A new diagnosis is made every two and a half minutes. Staggering statistics like this are enough to make any woman take pause, let alone any person. But if you are one of the millions whove been touched by this devastating disease, its even more.

October is breast cancer awareness month.

This cookbook is by Evelyn Lauder, founder of the National Breast Cancer Research Foundation http://www.bcrfcure.org/index.html and Senior Corporate Vice President of The Este Lauder Companies Inc., and all the royalties will go to that foundation. Unfortunately, there is distinctly little information about the books contents although I have read that it is in full color and includes recipes from Elizabeth Hurley.

This book was released last month.

New Cook Book Special Pink Edition
by Better Homes & Gardens Editors - Better Homes and Gardens/$19.95

1,200 recipes. 700 photos. And a good cause. Who could ask for more?

This is a rerelease of a classic cookbook and includes a new special 32-page booklet with stories of people whose lives have been touched by cancer. And a portion of the proceeds from its sale goes to benefit breast cancer research. This came out last month.
