Hump Day Horizons Goes Hawaiian

Its raining like crazy here in the northeast. The temperatures are dropping, the leaves turning and the grass browning. But rather than dwell on the changing season, Hump Day Horizons is going on a trip this week. Where are we off to, you ask? Hawaii.

Home to exotic foliage, wild surfs and a wealth of culture, Hawaii is beautiful year round, from what I hear. A good friend of mine was born and raised there. I learned so much about how different the islands were from the mainland from her. For instance, their very language was a little different, mixing various dialects together to label food.

So, here’s some new books to indulge your inner traveller and that part of you that wants to recreate vacation in your kitchen.

Aloha Cuisine
by Sam Choy - Mutual Publishing Company/$24.95

Sam Choy is a restaurateur with two places in Hawaii and several abroad. Born to a Chinese father and a Hawaiian-German mother, Choy was introduced to the kitchen by his father and enrolled in culinary training by his mother.

This book is due out Oct. 16.

Culture Shock! Hawaii
by Brent Massey - Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company/$15.95

This sounded like a cool, non-cooking but offbeat enough not to matter, book to feature. According to the description, this is full of information about the nuances and culture of Hawaii. It doesn’t just point you towards an attraction and say ‘there you go.’ It actually tells you how not to offend the locals. How cool is that?

This book is being released Oct. 28.

Little Hawaiian Cookbook
by Jean Watanabe Hee - Mutual Publishing Company/$7.95

This book is due out Oct. 16.
