How Much Would You Pay For A Fungus?
Well, actually, how much would you pay for a fungus you could eat? The Sacramento Bee’s Dan Vierria reports that last week, a three pound “humongous fungus” was sold for $160,406. It was a white truffle that was auctioned off in Hong Kong to a Hong Kong property tycoon and his wife.
Truffles are among the most expensive foods in the world, with the white truffle possessing a “pungent, earthy and garlicy” flavor. The buyer can use his white truffle thinly sliced over pasta, cheese dishes, salads or other dishes. Apparently, white truffles are all the rage in Hong Kong - the Ritz-Carlton there prepares the auction winning truffle for a charity dinner each year.
If white truffles aren’t your thing, but you’re in the mood to spend a whole lot of cash on some food items, try saffron, which sells for $3,000 to $4,000 a pound, or Caspian Sea Caviar, which goes for $200 or more for an ounce.

Living in France, I’ve had several chances to taste truffles, and have always been underwhelmed. Maybe they weren’t good ones, but I’ve never had a life-changing truffle experience.
Saffron is worth the money for me, though…
