Mmmmm….Comfort Food

Here in Northern California, it is chilly.  Very chilly.  So, I have been on the lookout for some tummy-warming comfort foods to help ease the effects of the cold.  Imagine my surprise when my new Sunset magazine arrived with a lovely picture of chicken pot pie on the front and the bold headline: Comfort Food Favorites.

On the topic of Chicken Pot Pies, Sunset offers a Biscuit-Topped Chicken Potpie and drops “the traditional pastry crust in favor of a no-fuss biscuit topping.”  Now, as the Resident Rachael Ray fan here at Paper Palate, I have to inform you that Rachael has been doing this for years in the form of her Chicken Mug Pie and Vermont Chicken Pie.  I’m just sayin’.  Those recipes are among my favorites because the biscuit topping makes it a very low stress operation.  Sunset also adds cremini mushrooms and fresh thyme to make the recipe a bit more grown up.

In order to warm us all up, Sunset also features Lasagna with Sausage Ragu that departs from the norm by including “layers of ragu and creamy nutmeg-scented bechamel.”  They tried to make the recipe easier to prepare by substituting Italian sausage for the traditional blend of beef, pork and veal.

Sunset rounds out its comfort food offerings with recipes for Beef-Ale Ste and Green Onion-Buttermilk Dumplings, Porcini Mushroom Meat Loaf with Mushroom Gravy, Ultimate Mac ‘N Cheese, and Smoky Beef and Bacon Chili.  Where should I start?
