Delicious Magazine April 2007

Delicious Magazine Cover April 2007Not sure what I was more excited about - the free Bendick’s Dark chocolate or discovering who this months featured blogger is!

I’m devouring a little of the chocolate as I read about Delicious Days, written by Nicole Stich. Delicious Days must be one of the world’s most popular food blogs - lovely design, inspiring content and lovely photos. Nicole gives her grandmother as her main inspiration -

“I’d spend weekends at her house watching her make cakes, jams and  dumplings. I’ve been on a quest to get my nan’s recipes since she died 10 years ago - she didn’t write them all down, but I inherited her favourite cookbook on which she made notes”.

This is the spring issue of Delicious - so the contents are full of daffodil pictures and Easter Eggs, at least in the Easter Weekend section. There is a recipe for a loaf sized hot cross bun (must remember to make some again this year), tips for Herb Scrambled Eggs served in their shells and, of course, a lamb recipe. They suggest Roast Leg of Lamb Stuffed With Spinach and Gremolata, which sounds interesting especially when served with a Cauliflower Gratin and Braised Peas With Leeks, Little Gem Lettuces and Mint. Fresh, clean and terribly Easter/Spring-like.

For a special Easter tea they have a delightful looking Rose Petal Chocolate Cake plus mini Simnel Cakes, Macaroons and Easter Biscuits.

Easter is in April this year - the 9th is Easter Monday.

I’ve been collating notes on which wines to match with chocolate for a forthcoming post on Spittoon and experimenting with various combinations and recipes. Delicious throws several wonderful sounding recipes my way for yet more experimentation! Broken Heart Chocolate Puddings With Mocha Sauce, Gilded Chocolate Profiteroles, Chocolate Truffle and Raspberry Tarts are all competing for my avid attention!

I must just mention the stunning photograph on page 116 of Clarence Court Chickens. It is taken inside a hutch and shows a magnificent white Old Cotswold Legbar Cockerel standing over the rest of the flock. Perfect lighting and focus. The eggs feature regularly in my shopping basket, when I fail to pick up some from outside the farm down the road. One recipe I want to try is Mark Hix’s Spring Vegetable Minestrone With Poached Quails Eggs. I’ll see if I can get my act together and try this out in the next couple of days. If I manage it, I’ll post full details here.
