Rocco DiSpirito: A Shadow of His Former Self
Since his days on NBC’s The Restaurant over three years ago, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito seems to have evolved into a kinder, gentler version of himself, as particularly evidenced by his appearances on Bravo’s Top Chef. Besides keeping the former nasties in check, he has also managed to shed some 30 pounds and has started competing in triathlons.
The 41-year-old still-single New Yorker recently released his fourth cookbook, Rocco’s Real Life Recipes, and did a quick Q&A with US magazine:
So, how does a chef lose weight?
I jump-started it with Atkins for about a month and a half. Now I’m doing triathlons and have a more normal diet. I don’t use sugar and eat lots of salads.
How do you say no to desserts?
The decision is easier because there’s a reason; I want to keep doing triathlons.
Has life changed since The Restaurant?
That experience led to a decision to stay out of the restaurant business. It’s made me a home cook.
Mama was a big part of the show. How is she?
She’s great! She had a heart attack after the show ended, and then had valve replacement surgery last summer. Now she’s like a kid again!
