Start the New Year Right with January’s Vegetarian Times

veg times jan 09Many view the start of the New Year as a chance to improve oneself, one’s diet and one’s environment.  The January issue of Vegetarian Times has plenty of articles and recipes to help almost anyone start 2009 off right.

Want to lose weight?  Check out the “satisfaction diet,” which uses ancient Indian Ayurvedic principles of six “tastes” (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent).  The tastes are combined to maximize the effect of these qualities on our diets and lives.  The idea is to eat less, but have it be more satisfying.

Have you resolved to eat more greens?  This issue makes it easy with a number of appealing recipes for greens, including mustard greens with broiled tofu and spicy mango sauce; a “Southern New Year’s Day Soup” with kale (which uses three foods said to bring luck in the new year – black-eyed peas, greens and stewed tomatoes), and a spicy soy sausage and turnip green stew.

Want to cut some of the fat out of your diet?  Try the cream-free creamed soups including curried cauliflower, sherried kabocha squash (the cover recipe) and more.

Was “eat more grains” your New Year’s vow?  Vegetarian Times has a section devoted to “easy weeknight” grain recipes.

Did you decide you want to learn how to make bread?  Check out what the magazine is calling “simply the best homemade loaves you’ll ever taste” with photos and step-by-step directions.

Want to help improve the world by supporting products and resources that support the vegetarian lifestyle?  Read “The Top Veg 25” for the magazine’s list of the best of the veggie crop.  Among them, a vegan craft outlet; websites that make it easier to find vegan blogs, vegetarian alcoholic products, even the most walk-friendly cities; vegetarian hunger relief, and a “green business” exposition.

Want to be more adventurous?  Check out the magazine’s special feature on Vietnamese Hot Pot (kind of a brothy, soup-based fondue with lots of vegetables and other goodies to dip).

Select recipes from Vegetarian Times issues tend to post on its website a month after an issue’s publication, so check out the magazine’s recipe archives in about a month to view a selection from this issue.  Or, better yet, get a copy now and start fulfilling all those New Year’s resolutions.
